Anurag IN NEWS
If you are amongst those very excited about Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming film Udta Punjab, hold your horses, for the jolly folks of the Indian film censor board have gotten scissor happy again. The board has outdone itself by making a record 89 cuts in the film and there is also a demand to drop the word Punjab from the film and to base the movie in a fictional state. Apparently, censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani and is cronies feel that the film in its present state is not appropriate enough for the fine upstanding citizens of this great nation. Already the trolls are having a field day with a number of people outraged by the Censor board’s reaction. Chief amongst those is filmmaker extraordinaire Anurag Kashyap himself who went so far as to Tweet to PM Narendra Modi demanding justice for Udta Punjab. Just check out these incensed tweets by the director who is clearly not in a bargaining mood.
There is no film more honest than UDTA PUNJAB .. And any person or party opposing it is actually GUILTY of promoting drugs — Anurag Kashyap (@anuragkashyap72) June 6, 2016
I always wondered what it felt like to live in North Korea .. Ab to plane pakadney ki bhi zaroorat nahin.. — Anurag Kashyap (@anuragkashyap72) June 6, 2016

I request Congress, AAP and other political parties to stay out of my battle. It's my Rights vs the Censorship. I speak only on my behalf — Anurag Kashyap (@anuragkashyap72) June 7, 2016
Anurag Kashyap may be a fantastic director, an amazing writer and even an interesting actor. But one thing he definitely is not, is an MMA fighter! We suppose making a movie about a street fighter doesn’t really make one a fighter as Kashyap found out to his cost recently. Apparently, the director got into a tussle with a mixed martial arts fighter and escaped with a busted eye. He even posted a photo on Instagram with a bandage over his left eye and captioned it with the line - Now they put a plaster, this is what happens when you get into a brawl with a MMA fighter. What exactly the Bombay Velvet director was doing with an MMA brawler is unknown but we have a feeling this could be a publicity stunt. The bandage looks genuine enough and if he is indeed sporting a black eye underneath, we have just one piece of advice for Mr Kashyap - Beta, tum se na ho payega.
Anurag Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri who have earlier worked together in the much celebrated Gangs of Wasseypur 1 & 2 series have come together yet again and made another masterpiece ‘Meeruthiya Gangsters’. Interestingly, Zeishan has directed the film whereas Anurag has edited it. We hear that Anurag was spellbound with the first cut of the film and that’s when he decided to edit it himself. In the process of editing, he found the script very interesting and hence he decided to present the film too. Anurag who has already donned the director’s and producer’s hat has also stepped into the editor’s shoes with ‘Meeruthiya Gangsters’ and will also be active for all the promotional activities and events for the film. Anurag will launch the first trailer of ‘Meeruthiya Gangsters’ in the first week of August. Talking about the movie Anurag said, “When Zeishan invited me to see the first cut, I kind of made an excuse, because I was scared I might not like it , then Vasan bala called me and said he was blown by it. Then I went and saw it and was not just surprised but completely taken in by it. Then me and Vasan sat with him , gave feedback. The film is so funny and edgy and also so contemporary. A modern india that's developing in the shadows of shopping malls and aspirations and need to be rich overnight. I love the film a lot and decided to come on board. You see the film and you can see where the characters of Wasseypur came from.” Are you excited about Meeruthiya Gangsters? Do let us know in the comments section below.
The latest buzz is that Blumhouse Productions and Ivanhoe Pictures have joined hands with Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films to produce Hollywood style horror films for India. Blumhouse Productions has made a number of brilliant horror features like Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister. The horror films that they create together will be under the Blumhouse banner. Jason Blumhouse, the CEO of Blumhouse Productions said, “Ivanhoe and Phantom are the perfect partners to help create engaging, terrifying films for the rapidly growing Indian market. We are excited to bring our approach of empowering film-makers to tell their favourite genre stories to local-language production.” Madhu Mantena, one of the co-founders of Phantom Films stated, “This is a first of its kind association in the Indian sub-continent and we couldn't be more excited about our collaboration with the progressive creative forces of Blumhouse and Ivanhoe.” Bollywood is definitely in need of some classy horror flicks and this association could be just what we have been waiting for!
Bit by bit, Anurag Kashyap has single-handedly changed the face of Bollywood. He began with modest films like Black Friday and slowly proved that Indian audiences can indeed appreciate fine cinema if given the chance. The success of his epic film Gangs Of Wasseypur stands testament to what this auteur has managed to create in the past few years. But now as we eagerly await the arrival of his next flick, Bombay Velvet, one can’t help but wonder, has he become a sell out?
For years Kashyap stayed away from the big stars, always preferring to work with fine actors rather than big names. He has been a very vocal critic of mainstream entertainment and often spoke out against people like Karan Johar. And now suddenly, Anurag and KJo are the best of friends. The head of Dharma productions not only stars in Kashyap’s next but the two also share a very good rapport. Moreover, Anurag Kashyap has ditched his niche actors in favour of stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.
Another juicy bit of news indicates that this director will soon become a part of the Shahrukh camp too. Besides doing a cameo with Vishal Dadlani for SRK’s Happy New Year, Anurag is also planning a film project with SRK. Apparently, they are in talks for a thriller titled Alwyn Kalicharan. Anurag has been pursuing this project for the past ten years and back then he was trying for Anil Kapoor. But it looks like Shahrukh is really keen to work with this talented director.
So it now appears as if Anurag Kashyap has moved on to the big league for good. One can only hope that this will not impact his creative process, since his fans are dying for more of his off-beat, zany brand of cinema. But this has happened a lot in the past and often it is not the director’s fault. Things remain much more in control when you are working with a small budget. When you have a humungous budget and a massive star in your lap, even the best of them have to cave in sometimes.
So do you think Anurag Kashyap is a sell-out? Or will he be able to successfully, impose his sensibilities on these stars? Do let us know in the comments section below!
