DEV ANAND

DEV ANAND

Date of Birth:   26 September 1923

Birth Place:  Gurdaspur, Punjab, India

Description:  Dharam Dev Anand is an Indian Hindi Cinema actor, director and film producer. Dev is the second of three brothers who were active in Hindi Cinema. His elder brother Chetan Anand was a film director, as was his younger brother, Vijay Anand. Their sister, Sheel Kanta Kapur, is the mother of renowned Hindi and English film director Shekhar Kapur. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. Dev Anand left his hometown for Mumbai. He began his career in the military censor office at Churchgate, Mumbai, for a salary of Rs.200. He was soon offered a debut as an actor by Prabhat Talkies to star in their film Hum Ek Hain(1946). While shooting for the film in Pune, Dev struck a friendship with another fellow legendary actor Guru Dutt. Dev was offered his first big break by Ashok Kumar. He spotted Dev hanging around in the studios and picked him as the hero for the Bombay Talkies production, Ziddi, costarring Kamini Kaushal (1948) which became a success. In 1949, Dev turned producer and launched his own company Navketan, which continues to produce movies even today. The presence of his 'discoveries' — the Zeenat and later, the Tina Munim (heroine of Dev's last recognized hit Des Pardes in 1978) — boosted Dev's image as the evergreen star even though he was well into his fifties. In September 2007, Dev's own autobiography "Romancing with Life" was released at a birthday party with the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. This evergreen actor passed away on 4th December, 2011 in London following a massive cardiac arrest.

Raksha Bandhan - Bollywood style!

Raksha Bandhan - Bollywood style!

31-07-2012

There's no genre of cinema in Bollywood that catches the fantasy of the entire country like family! And there's definitely no relationship as sacred and beautifully portrayed as that between brother and sister! So in the season of Raksha Bandhan- here's a list of 10 of our favourite pairs of bhai-behens who rocked the screen! You can't say siblings and not start the list with Dev Anand and Zeenat Aman in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. The story of estranged siblings, with younger sister Zeenat going hippie not only became a cult movie, but also showed the protective side of an elder brother. Arbaaz Khan played the slightly orthodox Bade Bhaiyya to Kajol in the romantic comedy- Pyaar kiya toh darna kya. His built and fury kept all danger away from his doting younger sister! With a family like that in Hum Saath Saath Hai- Neelam Kothari had not one, but three brothers who stood by her in her tough times. Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Mohnish Behl played the typical Rajshree support system to their behena. A little too protective, and on the dangerous side, was Karisma Kapoor's trio of brothers in Anari. Suresh Oberoi played the formidable authoritative elder bro – one of the few negative brother characters in Bollywood as far as we know. The film Fiza may not have been a BO hit, but the portrayal of siblings by the determined Karisma Kapoor and the traumatised Hrithik Roshan of their relationship was highly commendable. It's on a similar lines you have Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri in the critically acclaimed My Brother...Nikhil, where Juhi stuck by her brother's side through thick and thin. Abhishek Bachchan played elder brother to Priyamani in Raavan, where the reason for her death is shown to be a factor for why he hated the police force. In a lighter vein, you have the 'fraternal twins' Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai in Josh- absolutely mismatched, yet endearing. Talk of endearing, and you cannot leave out young Shweta Prasad playing the voice and ears of her elder deaf and mute brother Shreyas Talpade in Iqbal- the two made for a fun and lively pair. Most recently, Genelia D'Souza and Prateik were the realistic, quarrelling, yet concerned siblings in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa. Over the years, this understated, ever-evolving bond has been portrayed beautifully in cinema. Let's celebrate it again with Bollywood this Raksha Bandhan- Tell us who you'd like to see playing siblings on screen!
