Ratings: Two Star

Jackie Shroff’s incredibly agile, martial-arts loving, pink-lipped son Tiger is back with yet another action packed offering, Baaghi. And while his first film Heropanti proved to be a surprisingly successful one, let’s see what he has managed to come up with this time.

Right off the bat, Baaghi won’t be winning any screenplay innovation awards. It tells the tried and tested tale of a young man and a young girl who meet in the rain and fall in love. It also involves a train journey in case that one Bollywood romantic cliche isn’t enough and the duo soon fall madly in love. But of course Shraddha’s father is a money grubbing idiot who decides to marry her off to the meanest looking goon in town played by Sudheer Babu. Conveniently enough, it so happens that Tiger’s rebellious ways has resulted in him being packed off to a top secret, shaolin temple inspired martial arts school where he turns into the Karate Kid and gets beaten up by his own version of Mr. Miyagi played by the incredible Master Shifu. Armed with these sick martial arts moves, our rebel decides to bring down Sudheer Babu’s crime syndicate in a Raid Redemption inspired climax.

Director Sabbir Khan does a fair job of delivering an action packed film but not a romantic one. The movie goes for all style and no substance making the whole thing feel rather dull. The action of course is nothing short of brilliant, and if nothing, we definitely have a true action star in Tiger Shroff.

Tiger Shroff moves like nothing you have seen in Bollywood before, thereby setting the bar for action films to follow. But he really struggles when it comes to emoting in front of the camera and the dull premise of the movie doesn’t help things. Shraddha’s job is once again to look pretty and be annoying which she does to good effect. But we know that she is capable of more and one can’t help but feel that she has been wasted.

Overall, Baaghi still does little more than tease the potential of Tiger Shroff. It works very well as an action film but one can hardly call it a proper entertainer. Go for Tiger’s moves if you must, just don’t hope for anything more.We shall go with two and a half stars for this movie.
