Ratings: Two Star

Debut director Karan Anshuman’s Bangistan is what one can term as a spoof flick. It is based in the make believe land of Bangistan, where North Bangistan is the stronghold of the Muslims while Hindus have control over the southern region. Terrorist elements from both sides train and send two simpleton idiots, played by Riteish Deshmukh (Muslim fanatic) and Pulkit Samrat (Hindu fanatic) as suicide bombers to a peace conference that is to take place in Poland. These two know nothing about the other's intentions, and also change their identity to come across as followers of the opposite religion. To find out whether they actually succeed in blowing the conference to smithereens, well, you need to watch the movie. One scene which stands out in the movie is when the idiots of opposing religions defend their enemy during a round of religious banter. For this, kudos to Bangistan for trying to bridge the gap between warring religions with that specific scene particularly. Talking about performances, Riteish Deshmukh turns in a good performance, especially in the more serious scenes. Pulkit Samrat on the other hand seems to be on a Salman Khan hangover, as you feel is aping the superstar in quite a few of his scenes. Jacqueline Fernandez is chirpy and could have recreated the dance magic like she did in Kick, had she been given more elaborate steps. As far as the humour quotient goes, mostly the film involves jokes that are really not worth laughing at. There are a few scenes in between, however, which do make you chuckle a bit. Where the music is concerned, Saturday Night is the one song that stands out due to its peppy feel and direction, and manages to carve out an identity for itself in a world of Hindi film songs that are beginning to look very similar to each other. Ram Sampath has done a fine job of crafting the music around a satirical comedy about religion, but the movie definitely has two songs too many, which add to the length the film, another definite weak point. In the second half Bangistan seems to feel overstretched. We shall finally go for 2 stars for this Karan Anshuman movie.
