Ghayal 2’s fate seems just as wounded as the leading man’s luck. The poor reception to Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 seems to have hampered Sunny’s chances of starring in the Ghayal sequel. Of course, the box office flop could have been the last straw in the series of false starts to the project. The teaser of the 1990s cult film sequel was shown at Salman Khan’s Ready screening in 2010.
Tigmanshu Dhulia, Gangs of Wasseypur’s Ramadhir Singh and director of Paan Singh Tomar was supposedly roped in to direct Ghayal 2. Jodi Breakers director Ashwini Chaudhary was said to have replaced him, followed by Betaab director Rahul Rawail and then director of the original Ghayal, Rajkumar Santoshi.
Piyush Mishra, actor-writer, who also starred in the Wasseypur series, was said to be writing the screenplay and dialogue for the sequel but backed out. It seems Viacom 18 is mirroring the sentiment and is withdrawing their name from the film. The delay in the film’s making, apparently, exceeded their patience. That, and also the fact that Sunny Deol’s latest release did not perform up to the mark at the box office.
When it rains, it pours. The Punjab da puttar must know that only too well now, with Viacom 18 serving him a notice to return his signing amount. Whether or not he obliges will depend on how eager he is for another hit in his kitty, since Ghayal 2, no doubt, could garner eyeballs as headlines (and even box office returns) if made!
