Indian Media never backs out form thoroughly taking advantage of any news story that they can get their hands on. Inevitably, the same happened with the death of legendary actress Sridevi.
Journalists and news agencies first swarmed the home of Sridevi’s brother Anil kapoor at Juhu, Mumbai as soon as the news broke out. And the exploitation seemingly never stopped since then.
We have been bombarded with this “news” from every social media platform and every TV news channel with tributes, personal testimonials and conspiracy theories. While the has been no official statement about her demise, the initial rumors reveal that Sridevi succumbed to a heart attack while in a bathtub.
Obviously, numerous Indian news channels just had to round up their “experts” in this matter. They started theorizing about various treatments like plastic surgeries the actress had and whether she was on fat-burners or steroids!
Crass statements by reputed news channels further showed us the true face of Indian media. The headline says “Maut ka bathtub”. Showcasing a clip of the actress dancing on a wedding few days before her death titled - ‘Sridevi ka Aakhri Dance’ the anchor comments on this - ‘sharab ke nashe main chali gayi duniya se Chandni’.
Some News commented on this story in their own unique way, the host asked “If Sridevi was a teetotaler, then why did she drink that day? Did she drink because of family problems? Was she stressed about the end of her career? Was she depressed?” The ominous music playing in the background and visuals like a crime further emphasized on their point.
There are tens of other such examples which tell us that the quality of journalism in the country is drastically hampered in today’s day and age. We as audience feel strongly about this issue. Reporting a death of any person shouldn’t be considered as an opportunity to raise TRP through controversies!
