Film Review: Ranbir and Deepika's Tamasha is a beautiful but self-indulgent film

27-11-2015

Director Imitaz Ali rarely disappoints and when he has a leading pair like Ranbir and Deepika on his hands, one definitely expects nothing less than pure, unadulterated magic. Let’s see if the movie lives up to those expectations.

On the face of it, Tamasha tells a very familiar tale of a young boy named Ved (Ranbir) who is forced to walk down the beaten path by his tyrannical father. He suppresses his more creative and ambitious self and goes through life surrounded by a fog of sadness and self-loathing. But one fine day he runs into the lively and vivacious Tara played by Deepika Padukone and together they make a strange pact to be together for a month. They adopt different identities and playfully spend their time together in a sweet romantic bliss. But then a twist arrives in the form of a hard-hitting dose of reality and that’s where Tamasha’s inner melancholy truly shines out.

Imtiaz Ali crafts a beautiful if slightly self-indulgent film. The way he brings out Ved’s inner angst reflects Ali’s cinematic genius. He paints the movie with beautiful tones that only highlight the eventual pain of the protagonists. Ali’s only faltering point comes when he lingers on things for too long and at times tries too hard to make his point. While lovers of populist cinema might be put off by these moments, true cinephiles might find something to really love in this movie.

Ranbir Kapoor perfectly fits into the skin of the tortured protagonist. His layered portrayal of the character coupled with Deepika’s immense positivity breathes life into Ali’s beautiful story. The music by A R Rahman feels like a surprisingly scrumptious cherry on an already delicious cake.

Tamasha may not be the most entertaining movie of the year but there is definitely something special about it. When three good artistes come together with the sincere goal of telling a beautiful story, Tamasha is the result. We are sure you will find something to cherish in this beautiful tale of love. We shall go with 3 stars for Tamasha.
