Every year Akshay Kumar churns out mindless entertainers and redeems himself by doing films like Baby and Special 26. But Akki’s latest realistic thriller Airlift proves once and for all what a brilliant actor our Khiladi Kumar really is.
Airlift tells the tale of Ranjit Katyal, a successful businessman in Kuwait whose life changes overnight when the Iraq- Kuwait war erupts. From worrying about petty marital issues to running for their life once the Iraqi soldiers go on a rampage, this is not an easy transition to make for the Katyal family. But Ranjit steps up and transforms into this amazing, powerful leader of the masses trying to escape the war.
Overall, the film beautifully captures a very realistic and hard hitting story that is itself based on true events. Director Raja Krishna Menon does a fantastic job of staying away from Bollywood cliches and manages to tell the story without any filters. Comparisons to films like Argo are inevitable but that in no way diminishes the beauty of the movie. Nimrat Kaur is amazing and proves that she is here to stay.
But as stated before, the real star of this show is Akshay Kumar who sheds every shred of melodrama from his personality and delivers an absolutely killer performance. Some would argue that this is Akki’s best performance till date and that wouldn’t be too far from the truth.
While the first half of the movie will have you glued to your seats, the second half falters a little in terms of action and execution. But overall, Airlift manages to deliver a brutal portrayal of a very important story. Add to that Akki’s intense portrayal of Ranjit Katyal and you have something very very special indeed.
We shall go with three and a half stars for this brilliant little film.
