They're glamorous, they're stylish, they're ready to sway and they're almost always ready to bare. Yes, we're talking about bollywood's booty-liscious babes- Item girls!
The trend of item songs began way before we know it as it is today- with Vyjanthimala, then the era of Madhuri and Sridevi and now, younger girls like Malika Hayden.
Songs today are not only daringly seductive, but also associated with choreography that pushes the boundaries of what can be watched with family. Some of the songs of the past decade that we can't forget are:
Beedi- Bipasha Basu shed her classy actress/model skin for this village bell who dances and sings to earn her daily bread. With coarse lyrics and shoulders that shone, the song still inspires a rhythmic trance when you hear it on your music player. Omkara also had a subtler number- Namak. No less sexy, though.
Jalebi bai- Naam? Jalebi Bai. Mallika Sherawat may have done a lot of numbers in the past, but Jalebi Bai was something else! Twitter trended Jalebi-one-liners for quite a while and once you listen to the track, every time someone asks you, “Naam?”- you’ll involuntarily say- Jalebi Bai. No kidding.
Kajra re- People flocked to theatres to watch Bunty aur Babli- not only for the then-prominent Abhishek-Rani chemistry, but mostly for this kotha-style song that had both the Bachchan men and Aishwarya dancing too. Take a bow, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy- this track was epic!
Khalaas- Ishaa Koppikar made her presence first felt in the industry with this sultry, angry track from the very notorious ‘Company’. That was her first, and what really had us in the song, was Asha Bhonsle’s oh-so-awesome voice. Legendary!
Munni Badnaam- Just when we thought Malaika Arora-Khan was losing grip on her awesome item number spree- came in the badnaam Munni from Dabbang. The highlight of the song wasn’t only the choreography etched perfectly for Malaika, but also the crazy lines and moves that Salman danced on like a boss.
Sheila ki Jawaani- Welcoming Katrina officially to the item-girls line-up, this song from Tees Maar Khan won accolades for choreography. Ain’t nobody got a body like- Sheila!
Other songs that have defined sexy in the past are Mungda, Mehbooba Mehbooba, Piya tu ab toh aaja- All of which had Helen, Chhamma Chhamma from China gate with Urmila, Ek do teen and Choli ke peechhe- that's right! Madhuri Dixit's had her share of wow too, the 'Hum' song- Jumma Chumma de de- with the too hot to handle Kimi Katkar.
Bollywood's a treasure house of awesome with item-numbers. Which is your favourite?
