If at one time, having the proverbial godfather in the industry was the key to making it big, here's introducing a brand of new recruits in tinsel town who not only don't have a daddy-figure to guide them, but have grabbed some of the most awaited projects, or have already delivered mind-boggling performances in their debut lead roles.
Rockstar (2011) was a tragic love story that made an impact on music lovers and film-goers. With New Yorker Nargis Fakhri playing Heer, she was celestial to look at! The former model was the perfect choice opposite the lanky Ranbir Kapoor. Imtiaz Ali spotted her and decided to cast her. The role received mixed reactions, but it's rumoured that Nargis has signed more projects.
Direction-aspirant Arjun Kapoor didn't look as drool-worthy a couple of years ago, when he assisted his father Boney Kapoor on sets. But when he took to getting fit, he made sure he lost all the flab, and you know how girls swoon over him now. You'd have assumed that he'd feature in his father's productions, but Arjun debuted in the YRF blockbuster Ishaqzaade, and what a performance he gave! The rugged, charmed, crooked-smiled Parma was every girl's small-town fantasy.
Along with Arjun, Ishaqzaade brought to screen another sizzling first-timer, whose brash, outspoken personality stole hearts all over the country. That's right- Parineeti Chopra's second film, first as leading lady showed Bollywood what the flavour of the month should be when it comes to hotties. A PR kid with YRF before she was picked to play one of the supporting roles in Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, the girl out-sizzled everyone on screen who she shared space with. Parineeti's connection with Priyanka Chopra was dug up much later, but it's true that the two share a close bond. However, you can credit only Parineeti for the amazing screen presence and charming dialogues!
A taboo topic, a light take, and 2 débutantes who stole the country's hearts. Vicky Donor, produced by John Abraham was a film about a sperm donor Vicky Arora, played by Ayushmann Khurana. You've seen him on screen as an anchor and a VJ, but the movie showed off his acting skills with style. He was perfect for the Delhi boy. If his good looks and cheeky dimples weren't it, him having composed and sung the track 'Pani da Rang' from the movie surely cornered the girls!
Enter the leading lady of the same flick. A face you've seen in commercials shone in the spotlight. Yami Gautam, who played Vicky's love interest in Vicky Donor was a treat to the senses. Her acting and her smile won hearts. She actually wanted to be an IAS officer, but as luck would have it, she made it to ads and also dabbled in films down south. Without any guidance in Bollywood, this young lady has made her mark here and by the way boys fell for her, she'll hopefully be seen in more and more flicks.
Coming soon on screen, is the south Indian diva Ileana Dcruz, in Anurag Basu's 'Barfee', opposite Ranbir Kapoor and alongside Priyanka Chopra. She's acted in several Telugu movies, and will soon mark her presence in Bollywood with this venture, which is much anticipated. Those who have seen the trailers swear by the chemistry she shares with Ranbir on-screen.
Finally, Diana Penty on screen in trailers of Homi Adajania's Cocktail, has had jaws dropping. Of the bits that we hear her deliver dialogues on screen, it does look like she'd holding fort well opposite the screen scorching jodi of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. This perfect-looking model is giving Deepika tough competition on screen. Only time will tell how good the girl is when it comes to acting skill, but it's fair to say that the hopes on this débutante are high!
So yes, it's the season of débutantes that come without legacies to uphold and stepping stones too guide- and by what we see, they're out to capture Bollywood!
