As we approach the end of 2014, it’s time to take a look back at how the year treated B-town.
2014 promised to be a great year for our Bollywood actors but looking back, things didn’t really turn out as well as expected for our biggest stars. We cannot exactly pinpoint particular failures but overall, 2014 simply seemed to lack a satisfying number of successful films. But one bunch that relentlessly continues to shine is the young brigade. Not only have they entered the 100 Crore club but these youngsters managed to remain in the public eye almost throughout the year. We bring you the youngest achievers of B-town for the year 2014.
If 2013 belonged to Deepika Padukone, one can safely say that 2014 was Alia Bhatt’s year. She began the year by proving she is much more than a pretty face in Highway and then went on to deliver a 100 Crore-club hit, 2 States, soon after. She wrapped up with an adorable romantic film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and is all set to romance the likes of Ranbir and Shahid in the months to come. Besides gracing the covers of countless film and fashion magazines and bagging a ton of endorsements, Alia even shot a spoof and short film that went viral online. All that in just one year.
Her voice screaming ‘aye villain’ still haunts us, but the lovely Shraddha Kapoor did manage to recreate her Aashiqui 2 magic with Ek Villain too. But the real eye opener from this star kid came from her performance in Haider where she was up against powerhouse performes like Shahid Kapoor, Kay Kay and Tabu. Shraddha managed to hold her own and with a recent item song in Ungli she also proved her glam side. Her upcoming film with Varun – ABCD 2 will definitely be something to look forward to.
What can be said about this sweet and lovable Dhawan lad that hasn’t been said countless times already? After entertaining us like Govinda in Main Tera Hero he slipped back into his cute college-boy avatar for Humpty Sharma and excelled in both. But the real sucker-punch from this lad arrived recently when we caught a glimpse of his gritty, violent avatar in Badlapur. Exuding rap power and grace, Dhawan seems headed towards true Bollywood stardom, the likes of which could maybe one day topple the Khan themselves. He may have critics aplenty but Varun is silencing more and more of them with every passing film.
Parineeti Chopra has many accolades to her credit but 2014 was rather special for her in terms of sheer commercial projects. She had one Dharma flick and two YRF projects though not all of them worked out. Hasee Toh Phasee of course was an out and out success solely because of Parineeti’s brilliant performance. She followed it up with two big releases Daawat-e-Ishq and Kill Dil, making it a big year for this amazing performer. Slowly but steadily, Parineeti is turning out to be one of those rare commercial actresses who truly possess superior acting chops, much like sister Priyanka Chopra.
After a goofy stint in Hasee Toh Phasee, this Stundent Of The Year prodigy debuted as Bollywood’s newest angry young man in Ek Villain. Not only was he effective in a grey character but he also seemed comfortable breaking away from his sweet image. The best thing about actors like Varun and Sidharth is that unlike some stars before them, they seem utterly unafraid of experimenting with their roles even this early in their career. In fact it’s the character stereotyping that seems to be their real nightmare. Malhotra is busy buffing up for his next feature Brothers and we expect a lot from this young lad in the days to come.
