Ever since Priyanka Chopra's Mary Kom opened to rave reviews, it feels like almost every big star is clamouring to play either a boxer or a professional fighter. Sidharth Malhotra and Akshay Kumar are all set to go head to head as boxers in Brothers while we have all been hearing about how Aamir has bulked up to play a wrestler in his upcoming movie Dangal. On the other hand, we will soon see Ranbir Kapoor as a street fighter in Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet and we already caught a glimpse of Shah Rukh Khan's brawling abilities in the opening act of Happy New Year. The latest bit of news on the boxing front is that even our Dabangg Khan could be seen playing a pugilist in YRF's Sultan.
But this trend isn't really new. Here's taking a quick look at all those actors who have played boxers over the years.
Mithun Chakraborty in Boxer
Mithun da wasn't just known for his cool moves on the dance floor but also for his somewhat hilarious fighting techniques. He played a Boxer in a movie imaginatively titled Boxer where he takes on a buff looking Sharat Saxena in the ring.
Sunny, Bobby and Dharmendra in Apne
Apne was like a boxing home-video for the Deol family. While Dharmendra plays a washed up boxer, his sons try to reclaim his former glory in the ring.
Dharmendra – Main Inteqaum Lunga
Interestingly, Dharamji had previously played a boxer in the movie Main Inteqam Lunga and footage from that film was used as a flashback sequence in Apne.
Aamir Khan – Ghulam
Aamir Khan too has played a boxer in Ghulam. He plays a professional boxer who looks every bit the part with his careless swagger and easy confidence.
Sohail Khan – Aryan
Sohail Khan may have failed as a solo-lead star but one film that really stood out was Aryan: Unbreakable. The entire movie revolved around a boxer's ambition to win the national championship. While Sohail may have been unable to emote beyond his two standard expressions, he definitely looked the part with his buff frame.
